If you have tried two different numerology websites and got two different name numbers, you are not alone. The reason is usually simple: one site used the Chaldean system and the other used the Pythagorean system. Both are popular, and both have loyal followers, but they work in noticeably different ways.

Origins

Chaldean numerology is traced to ancient Babylon and the Chaldean priests and astronomers. It is closely linked to astrology, with each number tied to a planet. Pythagorean numerology is named after the Greek mathematician Pythagoras (around 6th century BCE), though the modern Western version was largely shaped in the 20th century.

How letters are numbered

The Pythagorean chart simply runs through the alphabet: A=1 … I=9, J=1 … R=9, S=1 … Z=8. The Chaldean chart groups letters by their sound vibration and only uses the values 1 to 8.

Same name, different result: an example

Take the name SONIA.

  • Chaldean: S3 + O7 + N5 + I1 + A1 = 17 → 8
  • Pythagorean: S1 + O6 + N5 + I9 + A1 = 22, a master number, or 4

Neither result is "wrong". Each system has its own internal logic, and you should stay consistent and use one system for all your readings.

Which name to use

Pythagorean practitioners usually calculate from the full name on your birth certificate, because they see it as your original blueprint. Chaldean practitioners focus on the name you actually use. That is why Chaldean numerology is so popular for name correction: changing how you spell your everyday name changes your vibration.

Compound and master numbers

Chaldean numerology pays special attention to compound numbers (10 to 52) and gives each one a symbolic meaning. Number 19, for example, is called the "Prince of Heaven" and is considered very fortunate. Pythagorean numerology is better known for master numbers, 11, 22 and 33, which are left unreduced.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Chaldean if you want name correction, business name analysis, mobile number analysis or a system closely tied to Indian astrology and planets.
  • Choose Pythagorean if you prefer a simpler, more Western approach and work mostly with your birth name.

Numara uses the Chaldean system throughout, so every calculator on this site gives you consistent results.
