Chaldean numerology is one of the oldest systems that links numbers to human character and life events. It takes its name from the Chaldeans, a people who lived in ancient Mesopotamia, in what is now southern Iraq, and who were known for astronomy, astrology and careful record-keeping. Many numerologists today, especially in India, prefer the Chaldean method over the more common Pythagorean one because they find it more nuanced and closer to the way sound and vibration work.
This guide explains the basic ideas of the system, how to calculate your own numbers by hand, and how to read the results sensibly.
The core idea: every letter has a vibration
Chaldean numerology is built on the belief that every sound has a vibration and that a number can represent it. When you speak or write a name, you produce a particular pattern of sounds. Converting those sounds into numbers gives a single "name number" that is said to describe how the world experiences you.
The Chaldeans assigned numbers to letters by sound, not by alphabetical order. That is the biggest difference from the Pythagorean system, which simply counts A=1, B=2, C=3 and so on through the alphabet.
The Chaldean letter chart
| Number | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, I, J, Q, Y |
| 2 | B, K, R |
| 3 | C, G, L, S |
| 4 | D, M, T |
| 5 | E, H, N, X |
| 6 | U, V, W |
| 7 | O, Z |
| 8 | F, P |
Notice that no letter is given the value 9. In Chaldean tradition 9 is a sacred, complete number. It is never assigned to a letter, but it can still appear as the result of a calculation.
The main numbers in a Chaldean chart
1. Birth number (psychic number)
This is the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit. Someone born on the 23rd has a birth number of 2 + 3 = 5. It describes your inner nature, instincts and how you see yourself, and it is the most commonly used number in Indian numerology.
2. Life path number (destiny by date)
Add every digit of your full date of birth and reduce it. For 14 August 1992: 1+4+0+8+1+9+9+2 = 34, and 3+4 = 7. The life path shows the broad direction of your life and the lessons you are here to learn.
3. Name number
Convert each letter of the name you use every day with the chart above, add the values, then reduce. Chaldean numerologists usually look at the name you are actually known by, not necessarily the one on your birth certificate.
4. Compound numbers
Before you reduce a total to a single digit you get a two-digit "compound" number, such as 23 or 41. Chaldean numerology gives each compound number from 10 to 52 its own meaning. That extra layer is one reason people find the system rich.
A worked example
Take the name RAVI KUMAR.
- R(2) + A(1) + V(6) + I(1) = 10
- K(2) + U(6) + M(4) + A(1) + R(2) = 15
- Total = 25 (compound), then 2 + 5 = 7
Ravi's name number is 7, the number of the seeker, which is linked to introspection, research and spiritual interests. If his birth number is friendly with 7, the name is thought to support him. If it clashes, a numerologist might suggest a small spelling change.
Chaldean vs Pythagorean in one minute
- Letter values: Chaldean is based on sound (1-8); Pythagorean follows alphabetical order (1-9).
- Name used: Chaldean prefers your everyday name; Pythagorean usually uses the full birth name.
- Compound numbers: Chaldean reads them in detail; Pythagorean focuses on single digits and master numbers.
How to use numerology sensibly
Numerology is a tool for reflection, not a scientific prediction. Use your numbers to understand your tendencies, to start conversations about strengths and weaknesses, or simply for fun. Don't make major financial, medical or legal decisions based on numerology alone.
